BURPs are the Big Ugly Rock Pieces that you find more and more in the LEGO sets these days. They are used to reduce the piece count, and the complexity of sets.  But, they also are not as useful as the regular bricks they replace.  They are of a fixed dimension, so you have to build around them, instead of finding pieces to fit what YOU want to build.

There are many different styles and shapes of BURPs.  Here is one example from the Peeron listing for the 7623 Temple Escape.

Sometimes you’ll find a neat use for a BURP.  I think the most common is in building Castle themes, since many of the BURPs are gray, brown or a combination.  However, you can build space fighters with them if you dare!
